„Camion des mots“ (France)

“Camion des mots” (a lorry loaded with words) visits 120 towns in France each year. Children and young people aged 8-15 years are thereby playfully engage in the French language. Teachers escort their classes and are welcomed by volunteers from the Lire et faire lire initiative – who then support them in playing computer-based games in the lorry. Playful units take 30 minutes, and participants receive a “diploma” while teachers are rewarded with further games they can employ in classroom settings. 400 different language games are available containing questions on peculiarities of the French language (grammar, spelling etc.). The games were designed by the French literature magazine “Lire”.

Classroom scores are saved and classes can thus compete with each other. Winners of a school year comparison are invited to a “Word Feast” later in the year, held in an official state building (Senat, Élysee-Palace etc.).

The project was initiated by the Express-Roularta publishing house (which publishes the journals “L’Express” and “Lire”) and the organisation “Lire et faire lire”. The lorry went on its first tour in the 2005/2006 school year. Camion des mots is funded by several sponsors. Media coverage is always great owing to the popularity of “Lire” and “L’Express”. The TV channel France 3 often features the lorry’s activities.
