“Growing up with books” in Belgium

Logo-Mit-Buechern-gross-werdenSince 1997, the media education team of the media centre has conducted the action programme “Growing up with books” to highlight the importance of reading for the development of children. Families are thus supported in instilling a joy of reading and books in children and in enfolding their imaginative potential.

Families living in Belgium’s German-speaking language community will receive mail from the media centre when their child is ten months old (and since 2002, a second time when the child has reached its fifth birthday). The respective letters can be displayed at the local library and the parents will thus be given a baby book or “bookworm” package respectively. The packages do not only contain a picture book, but also tips and recommendations for reading, nursery rhymes and vouchers for libraries and bookstores.

In 2007, “Diggis Lesekids” was launched, inviting all ten-year old children to visit the library, to engage in reading and to collect stamps for a “Diggi” passport. On the occasion of the World Day of Books, libraries invite the participants to a festival and award prizes.

In 2012, the project enters a second phase, addressing fifteen-year old tens in the community.
