Christopher J. Lonigan

Prof. Dr. Christopher J. Lonigan is a Distinguished Research Professor of Psychology and an associate director of the Florida Center for Reading Research at Florida State University. He received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology in from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Lonigan was awarded a two-year National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship at the John F. Kennedy Center at Vanderbilt University to study developmental disabilities.

He has published over 100 scholarly articles and book chapters. His current research projects include early identification of reading disability, effectiveness of Response to Instruction models in preschool, assessments for Spanish-speaking English learners in the U.S., preschool curriculum evaluation, the development of reading comprehension, and the interaction between the development of self-regulation and academic skills.

In addition to his research, he has served in various roles in the education community in the U.S., including consulting with states on the establishment of early childhood learning standards, helping develop assessments for use by early childhood educators, and chairing or serving on committees to evaluate effective educational practices.
