About us

The portal Reading worldwide was created by the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) in cooperation with the Reading Foundation (Stiftung Lesen). The project was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2008 to 2012. Since May 2012 Reading worldwide is provided by the German Reading Foundation (Stiftung Lesen).

Reading promotion comes in many different ways, such as books hidden in taxis and at the hairdressers’ in Singapore, book prescriptions recommended by medical professionals in Kirklee and speed datings for book lovers in London.

If you wish to know more about actions, campaigns and projects that are carried out in diverse countries in the world to motivate people to read, you will find manifold information here.

Even though national initiatives for the promotion of reading have nearly become a worldwide standard, so far no platform providing transnational information with regards to resources and initiatives aimed at the promotion of reading competence has existed. However, an international comparison and exchange of experience gained from successfully conducted projects is indispensable to advancing the development of concepts. The outcomes of projects can provide incentives to multipliers and thus contribute to a sustainable improvement of educational opportunities in Germany. Reading worldwide meets this challenge and it presents information on the successful practice of reading promotion in a user-friendly manner: we aim to inspire a constructive collaboration in co-operative projects across borders.

The documentation of institutions and projects in the field of reading promotion in diverse countries and continents is conceived as a “work in progress“. We will continue to review material and research studies, interview scholarly authors and introduce you to experts and multipliers in reading promotion by interviewing them. Our primary interest lies in an overview of the worldwide reading sphere and we consider ourselves – first and foremost – as providers of an information platform. Our initial focus will lie on countries active in reading promotion in Europe and the English language area. We will continually research results from other countries and present them in both detail and depth. While we cannot have in mind a comprehensive coverage of all activities, we will highlight practical models that can be viewed as innovative, motivating examples worth imitating.

Reading worldwide intends to provide anyone privately or professionally interested in the promotion of reading with an opportunity to gain an overview of the full scope of reading initiatives, projects and models: this service is quick, up-to-date, and free of charge.
