Now only a mouseclick away: Projects promoting reading around the world

"Reading worldwide": at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2008, the German reading foundation Stiftung Lesen and the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF) will launch an online platform that will successively deliver a comprehensive overview of activities promoting reading throughout the world. This new service is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Frankfurt/M., Mainz - October 13, 2008 – Reading promotion comes in many different ways, such as Reading promotion comes in many different ways, such as books hidden in taxis and at the hairdressers’ in Singapore, book prescriptions recommended by medical professionals in Kirklee and “speed datings“ for book lovers in London. Beyond such unusual examples, an international exchange of experience in promoting reading is essential: In a globalised media society, project modules can be mutually applied, and synergies can be achieved. The online platform, www.Lesen-weltweit.de, was released on the occasion of the Frankfurt Book Fair starting on October 15, 2008, and can be accessed free of charge. As information platform it intends to foster an international transfer of ideas and support the work of multipliers active in reading promotion in schools, kindergartens and any other location where a joy of reading is inspired. "Reading worldwide" results from a strong partnership: on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the Stiftung Lesen and the German Institute for International Educational Research jointly operate the platform www.Lesen-weltweit.de. Furthermore, the project partners are supported by the Goethe institutes. This co-operation allowed for a wide-spread preliminary search and it is projected for many years to come as sustainability is essential to such a comprehensive project with an international orientation. In addition to the 18 countries we present now, Initiatives from further countries will be consecutively documented.

The portal will be presented at the stand of the Stiftung Lesen e.V., at the Frankfurt Book Fair (October 15-19 2008), in hall 3.1 , stand no. L 129.
